A Christmas house decoration for the whole family
Updated December 16, 2019 08:16:03A family’s Christmas house decor is on its way to becoming a reality in a Queensland community.
Key points:The house is being decorated to make it look like it’s in a different time and placeThe family had the idea of creating a festive house in the community about 12 years agoThe decor will be put up at the local community centre for the rest of the yearThe family wanted to decorate their home in a traditional way so the family could be in the same time and location of their ancestors.
The idea came to the family when they decided to buy their first home in Queensland.
“We thought we’d have it for Christmas, it was the perfect time for us to do it and we were really looking forward to it,” says Mark, the elder of the family.
The family originally bought their home at the Goldfields community centre in 2016, but had to move because of the construction of the road to the community centre.
“So it’s a great time to come up with something like this, it’s going to be on a hillside, it will be surrounded by trees,” he said.
“It’s going, it’ll be a very traditional looking Christmas home.”
It was a little bit of a gamble, the family thought the Christmas decor might not be as successful as they thought, so they contacted local decorator and house painter, Chris Burt.
“I didn’t expect it to be so popular,” he says.
“But it is what it is.
It’s been going for a little over a year now, and we’ve only had one other person come and do it in the last year.”
The family’s home will be covered with a bright yellow, white and blue blanket and will have a big glass display case.
“That’s where the decorations are going to sit and that’s the place where the people can actually look up at and see what it looks like,” Mr Burt said.
It will also have a video screen, a Christmas tree and a Christmas carol.
“This is a real opportunity to give back to the people and to help them remember what it’s all about,” he added.
“And that’s what it will hopefully do.”
Christmas decorating is a popular hobby in Queensland, with families spending more than $1 million a year on decorations.
A Christmas house ornament is a traditional wooden house ornament, usually decorated with a coloured ornaments or a wooden door frame.
It has a wide range of functions including being a display of goods, a symbol of love and friendship or even a decorative element in a home.
“They have a whole range of different things that can be put into them,” Mr Smith said.
He said it was something that was hard to sell in a local market.
“You can’t buy them, you can’t have them, they are quite expensive,” he explained.
“These are handmade pieces of wood that have been used by people for thousands of years.”
To be able to do that in Queensland is quite special.
